New state homes delivered in eastern Porirua

There is new public housing for people and whānau in eastern Porirua after Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities delivered 10 warm, dry and healthy homes in Cannons Creek in Porirua.

Associate Minister of Housing and Porirua MP Hon Kris Faafoi joined Ngāti Toa Rangatira kaumatua and local officials at a blessing ceremony this morning.

Patrick Dougherty, Deputy Chief Executive – Construction and Innovation at Kāinga Ora says the new homes are fully insulated and have double glazing, which means they will be warm and dry.

“The eight two-bedroom homes and two five-bedroom have been built to a very high standard, and it’ll be exciting to see the new tenants move in and enjoy the benefits of living in a safe, warm, dry home,” he says.

The 10 houses are the first stage in Castor Crescent, with the second stage (20 homes) and third stage (23 homes) set for completion later this year. In total, the Castor Crescent development will have 53 homes, with a range of different sizes (24 x 1 bedroom, 20 x 2 bedroom, 4 x 4 bedroom and 5 x 5 bedroom).

“This new development site, which previously housed 27 ageing and earthquake prone state houses, is a perfect example of how Kāinga Ora is working to make better use of their land and space to house New Zealanders,” says Patrick.

The Champion Street homes will also feature the kia ora mats, and the original mat, which Moana Road kindly gifted, will take up residence at Porirua Development’s Community Info Hub in Cannons Creek.

Porirua Development
In November 2018 the Government announced a $1.5 billion investment over the next 25 years to work with the community on revitalising eastern Porirua.

The development is part of a wider plan to make about 2,000 state houses warmer, drier and safer in eastern Porirua and deliver an additional 150 state houses. Alongside this an additional 2,000 affordable and market homes will be built.

The development is a partnership between the Crown and Porirua City Council to deliver the work in eastern Porirua. Kāinga Ora is also partnering with Ngāti Toa Rangatira to improve public housing in western Porirua.
