New homes coming to Niger Street

NIger St 2

The next stage of development work in eastern Porirua is about to get underway, with the announcement of 18 new warm, dry state homes to be built in the area around 3 Niger Street, Cannons Creek.

Porirua Development Project Director Will Pennington says it’s exciting to be announcing the next lot for eastern Porirua.

“These 18 new homes are the first homes announced as part of the second stage of work in the area, and will be a range of sizes, from one-bedroom to five-bedroom homes,” he says.

The homes will be built on existing Kāinga Ora land and, before these new homes can be built, eight existing state houses will have to be vacated and demolished.

“Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities tenancy liaison officers have been working closely with affected tenants over the past few months to inform them about the development and update them as things progress,” says Mr Pennington.

“Kāinga Ora will be lodging the first resource consent application in September for the 18 new homes to be built on the site, which has frontage to Niger Street, Castor Crescent and Miranda Street.”

Demolition is planned to take place later this year, with site blessings in early 2021, and construction of the new homes to start soon after that.

There are two sites in Cannons Creek with building work currently underway as part of stage one of the Porirua Development – Castor Crescent (53 homes) and Champion Street (14 homes).

In Castor Crescent, 10 homes were completed in July, with tenants moving in to their new homes in early August. A further twenty homes are due for completion later this year, and the remainder (23 homes) early next year. The 14 one-bedroom homes in Champion Street are on track for completion later this year.

Over the course of the project, about 2,000 state homes will be made warmer, drier and safer and an additional 150 state houses will be built in eastern Porirua. The development will also enable the building of around 1,500 affordable and market homes.
