Asbestos Removal and Demolition work update

Digger

Asbestos removal and demolition work has been underway on Castor Crescent, Niger Street, Iris Grove and Esk Place, we have been preparing the land to make way for more new, warm, safe and dry homes for whānau in eastern Porirua.

In preparation of the land to be built on, we need to decide what to do with the old houses that are no longer fit-for-purpose. Depending on the state of these houses, we can either:

  • keep and upgrade the house
  • remove and relocate them to another area or
  • demolish the house and recycle the building materials.

Process
Following investigation, our vacated homes on Iris Grove, Castor Crescent, Calliope Crescent, Hazzard Grove, Esk Place, Niger Street, Fantame Street and Miranda Street will need to demolished and replaced with new, fully insulated, double glazed homes.

Prior to being demolished we will test the house to see if there are any hazardous building materials like asbestos present. If there is, we employ licensed asbestos contractors to ensure the asbestos is removed safely to protect workers and anyone living nearby,

We are also looking to identify and repurpose as much building materials as possible. Items that can be repurposed are currently being stored whilst we work with key members of the community to find a solution that benefits eastern Porirua.

Unfortunately, it is not always possible to retain or recycle materials because there may be asbestos or lead present or because they are not in good condition. These materials are then taken to landfill and if they are identified as hazardous they will be , securely disposed of.

What can I expect?
There will be some noise and dust as we deconstruct houses and when we are ready to build new homes we will need to put a few  place traffic detours in place to keep residents safe as we carry out the work.

Wewill be working with local businesses, residents and Porirua City Council to minimise the inconvenience.

To complete the work, we have hired contractors to prepare the land for new homes. Over the coming months they will be completing tasks such as surveying, removing asbestos safely and demolishing houses.

Their working hours will be between 7 am and 7 pm Monday – Saturday, except on public holidays. If there is to be any work carried outside of those hours we will notify residents.

When is this happening?
Over the last few months we have been working to remove 72 homes from Cannons Creek. We have almost finished, and work is scheduled to be completed by the end of August 2021.
