Wastewater upgrade project kicks off

The Bothamley Park wastewater upgrade project is about to kick off. In late 2021, we asked the community how they use Bothamley Park and how we can make it better for them in the future. The community told us that te taiao (the environment) was important and fixing the wastewater pipe, that regularly overflows into Kenepuru Stream and Te-Awarua-o-Porirua, was a priority.

After over two-years of design, planning and consent applications the wastewater pipes upgrade is about to become a reality. This is a significant milestone, as it is the first significant water infrastructure upgrade for the area funded through the Government’s Housing Acceleration Fund.

The 3km of new, much wider, pipes along with a brand new wastewater storage tank being built by Wellington Water beside SH59 will prevent approximately 40,000m3 of raw sewage from flowing into local waterways each year. That’s equivalent to 16 Olympic swimming pools.

It’s important mahi that will take around three years to complete.

Over the next 20 years Porirua Development will deliver thousands of new warm, dry homes in eastern Porirua. However the focus isn’t just on building homes but about enhancing the total wellbeing of the area. The new pipes in Bothamley Park will not only be better for our environment and the health of our community, they’ll also enable new homes in the area and create opportunities for other improvements to be made to Bothamley Park.

To complete this work, some of the pine trees through the park will need to be removed. This provides an excellent opportunity to make landscaping enhancements, improve access and safety and to replant key areas within the park with native species. We’ll work closely with our project partners Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Porirua City Council and our delivery partner Te Aranga Alliance to create something that is better for the environment, meets the community’s needs, and is also sustainable for future generations to enjoy.

Progress always involves some short-term disruption that needs to be managed and, unfortunately, Bothamley Park is no different. The main track through the park will close for around two years and other parts of the park will close for short periods. We’ll make sure that there are always be parts of the park open for walking, cycling and for community activities. And we’ll work closely with our partners to minimise the noise, dust and traffic disruption and to keep the community safe throughout the upgrade.

This project started with community kōrero and we’d like to keep that going as the work progresses. Come and talk to us at the Info Hub at 26 Warspite Ave, Cannons Creek. Over the next month, until 15 December, our Bothamley Park wastewater upgrade project specialist will be in the Info Hub between 10 -11.30am every Thursday.

Bothamley Park Track Closure 12 and 13 December

The track between Lincoln Grove and Bellona Place will close on 12 & 13 December, between 9am and 4pm, for prep works for the planned wastewater pipe upgrade.  The track will be open for the rest of December but close again in January when the main upgrade work begin. An alternate route is available so you can keep enjoying our beautiful community park.
